Konark Dance Festival - A legacy

A dedication to many ancient dance forms from various parts of India

Set against the awe‑inspiring backdrop of the 13th‑century Sun Temple at Konark, the Konark Dance Festival is Odisha’s signature cultural extravaganza.

This five‑day annual event draws dancers, musicians, artisans, and enthusiasts from across India and abroad. Held in an open‑air auditorium adjacent to the temple’s famed Nata Mandir—once a sacred dance hall—performances come alive under the moonlit sky, echoing the temple’s sculpted dancers and divine rhythm.

Audiences witness an exquisite showcase of India’s classical repertoire: Odissi, Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Mohiniattam, Manipuri, Kathakali, Sattriya, along with regional folk and tribal dances. The festival was founded in 1986 by Padmashree Guru Gangadhar Pradhan and is now organized by Odisha Tourism and the Odissi Research Centre to promote classical arts and heritage.

Alongside dance, it features the International Sand Art Festival at Chandrabhaga Beach and a vibrant crafts mela showcasing global sand carvings and local handicrafts. Each evening, as drums, flutes, and ghungroos resonate amid temple ruins, spectators are transported into a timeless celebration of movement, history, and culture.

For lovers of dance and heritage, Konark is nothing short of magical.
